My Teachers Were Right, We Do Use Science in Real Life

Remember in school, how we were convinced we were never going to use this stuff in real life? While I may not use what I learned from reading Canterbury Tales in my daily life, I certainly wish I had paid a little more attention to those biology and anatomy classes.

If you read my last post I talked about my "medical rock bottom". The moment my doctor told me I had MRSA. The moment I realized that years of antibiotic overuse had destroyed my immune system, and that I was no longer willing to live a life being sick all the time. I didn't know how I was going to do it but in that moment I made the decision that I was going to heal my body and live a life that was no longer dependent on pharmaceuticals.

I wish I could say that my journey was completed but what I've learned in the last two years is that wellness is just that, a journey. I learn something new every day. What I can say is that I haven't had to take an antibiotic in over two years, and I haven't had a staph or MRSA infection in two years. I want to share with you a few things I did to reset my body and start to regain my health. This blog is not intended to give medical advice but to share a very short overview of the steps I took to regain my health and ultimately my live.

The first step and probably most important step was cleaning up my diet. What does that even mean you may ask? For me it meant cutting out processed foods. This didn't happen overnight and I want you to know if this is where you are, it won't happen overnight for you either. I slowly started getting rid of food that came out of boxes and bags. The number one culprit in feeding infection in your body is sugar. If you feel overwhelmed or can't make the switch all at once cut out sugar! It is HARD but so important when you are trying to heal a sick body.

Second, I learned the science about how my body works. I learned terms like microbiome, gut permeability, and biofilms. These were all new words to me and I was shocked to learn that the things I put in my body and the things I put on my body had such a profound effect on my health. When I started learning about these biological functions and how each of these played a part in my health and how I could actually heal my body by focusing on these things, I began to have hope again.

The third step I focused on was using supplements to help where my body needed extra support. I started learning about vitamins, minerals, and herbs that support healthy immune function. Instead of taking a simple multivitamin , I focused on the things that my body specifically needed. Multivitamins are great, but sometimes when we are healing our bodies we need more a more focused supplement routine.

As I started learning to heal my body, I started to become angry that people in whom we put our trust to heal us, to help us learn how to get healthy offer no solutions except a pill to pop or a cream to apply. Don't get me wrong, there is a time and a place for pharmaceuticals, but most of the time a doctor visit results in simply treating a symptom not the root cause. What I learned was that in order to heal my body I had to find what is causing the symptoms. Fix the cause, the symptoms go away.

In my case, gut permeability from years of antibiotic use was causing my immune system to malfunction. I was able to fix my gut, the root cause, which in turn allowed my immune system to function properly. As a result of fixing my gut and allowing my immune system to function properly, my body was able to fight infection and the need for antibiotics no longer existed.

It has taken me a few years to work through all of these thoughts, and I'm still learning. I hope to make betterhealthbybeth a space where people can learn the power of healing through taking care of their bodies and eliminating the root cause of their issues. So many of the issues we face can be fixed by making a few tweaks to our diets and lifestyle. If you suffer from chronic infections, mystery aches and pains, stomach issues, skin rashes, or anything else that you just want answers for I hope you will join our community.

I thank you so much for taking the time to listen to my story. As time goes on I will share a little more about my journey and steps I have taken and continue to take. In the meantime I will continue to make the betterhealthbybeth community a place to learn and grow and eventually a place you will be able to seek help in figuring out how to find the best, healthiest version of yourself.
